The construction work for the bridge began on November 08, 2019, and is expected to reach completion within the next two years. The two-km long bridge is a one-of-its-kind project for the Indian Railways.

Union Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal also mentioned it in one of his tweets, along with an animated video of the project showing how the final outcome will look. He said, “Good News For Devotees of Ramanathaswamy Temple: Work on India’s First Vertical Lift Railway Sea Bridge is in full swing at Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. Foundation stone of this 2 km long bridge, connecting Rameswaram on Pamban island & mainland India, was laid by PM @NarendraModi Ji https://t.co/HiOfLvYsXo.”

This bridge will further allow Indian Railways to run trains with more weight and at a higher speed and will help boost traffic volume between mainland Pamban and Rameshwaram.

Since Rameshwaram is a site of significant religious importance, which attracts thousands of devotees throughout the year, this bridge will prove beneficial for spiritual travellers too.

The country’s first-ever vertical lift sea rail bridge is estimated to cost around INR 250 crores.
