After reporting the region’s first COVID-19 case in January 2020, Taiwan has seen the light of the day as local authorities recently announced a milestone in its battle against the Coronavirus. As per reports by Al JazeeraTaiwan’s Centers for Disease and Control (CDC) announced that the Republic of China has seen no new locally transmitted positive cases in the past 200 days. However, the report also states that the local authorities continue to note new cases rising from travellers returning from international borders. Thanking its residents, local authorities continue to urge people to wear masks and wash their hands regularly, states the same report.

According to a report by Timeexperts claim that closing borders early on (Taiwan has been strictly monitoring its borders since March), rigorous contact tracing, mask-wearing, and technology-enforced quarantining has played a major role in curbing the virus’ spread. The fear of slipping back into a SARS-like pandemic again has also played a major role in scaring people of Taiwan into compliance, states the report.

The battle, however, is not over just as yet. As per the same report by Al Jazeera, the CDC reported three new positive cases in the country—one each from travellers returning from the Philippines, United States of America, and Indonesia. Currently, Taiwan is practising a 14-day mandatory quarantine for all international arrivals, irrespective of nationality.

So far, the Asian nation has recorded 553 positive cases since the start of the pandemic, with 513 recovered patients (as on October 30, 2020). To further contain the virus spread and catch its transmission early on, the authorities have reportedly undertaken 1,01,218 COVID-19 tests so far.
