People residing within the municipal corporation limits of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region can now undertake inter-district travel. They can move freely between Mumbai, Thane, Vasai-Virar, Navi Mumbai, Kalyan-Dombivli, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar, and Panvel. Any e-pass is not needed for these trips. The only condition is that one can take these trips strictly in private vehicles. Taxis and autos are still not allowed for commercial operations, and they can only ply for essential services. This and many other exemptions have come into effect starting June 5. Other exemptions include the opening of shops. All shops in Mumbai can now open on alternate days, on an odd-even basis. However, they must ensure strict social distancing measures.

The Maharashtra government has also allowed outdoor activities like jogging, running, and cycling. The order read, “The inter-district movement of persons within the area of municipal corporations under the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) shall be allowed without any restrictions.”

Interstate and inter-district movement in other parts of the state remain prohibited. These relaxations will help easy movement as the state government has also allowed private offices to resume operations starting June 8. These offices can operate at a maximum of 10 staff and will need to arrange their own transportation. Printing and distribution of newspapers, as well as home delivery, has also been allowed from June 7.

The order issued by chief secretary Ajoy Mehta, on Thursday, read, “It shall be with the knowledge of receiver for the delivery of the newspaper, personnel shall wear a mask and use hand sanitiser and maintain social distancing.
