Waheeda Rehman’s ‘never say never’ attitude is an inspiration to anyone who has stopped pursuing their dreams. By Shrimayee Thakur
“Age is just a number,” this phrase has been used time and again to motivate people to power through their fear of what they can do at a certain age. Whether it is clothes, hobbies, or even academic pursuits, age is a factor that is often seen holding people back from what they want, for fear of social repercussions. Waheeda Rehman is among the few that have shed any inhibitions to pursue what they love doing.
In the 1950s, a teenage Waheeda Rehman swept across the silver screen, capturing the hearts and minds of audiences with her brilliant acting, grace and beauty. Her fame only grew over the years, establishing her as one of the most celebrated actresses of her time. At 81, the actress is as undaunted and filled with zeal for life as ever. Wildlife photography and scuba diving are two hobbies that Waheeda has chosen to take up.
Even at the height of her fame, the actress still found time for her pursuits. As she told a leading daily, “I have always loved taking pictures. When I was young, I would carry a small camera with me on the sets.”
Retiring from the film industry has given her more time to hone her skills, she explained, saying “When it comes to wildlife photography, you need to have luck and patience. Earlier, we didn’t have any school or teacher to learn photography, so I used to do it in a haphazard manner. But after I retired, I had enough time to learn and pay attention to the art.”
She stresses the importance of being patient and relentlessly pursuing your dream. “I am happy that I am pursuing a nice hobby. I was always passionate about photography. I feel you need passion, patience and luck to take the kind of pictures (wildlife pictures) that we have displayed here. I have been taking pictures for a long time but not without learning properly. I have learnt it from Himanshuu Sheth. We have travelled across India, Tanzania, Namibia, Maasai Mara (Kenya), Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to take these pictures,” she quoted.
In an interview with Twinkle Khanna, Waheeda expressed her desire to learn scuba diving, which is the next wish on her bucket list. When Twinkle asked “At 81, you want to go scuba diving?”, her response was “Why not?”
