This World Environment Day commit to making some small shifts in your daily life to help Mother Earth heal from years of neglect. Live sustainably and harmoniously with nature through these practices and do your part in reducing the damage to the planet. By Manya Saini

This World Environment Day, pledge to make personal choices that will help our planet combat climate crisis. It seems overwhelming, but if each one of us does our bit, the impact will be insurmountable to the planet. Carbon footprint refers to the total amount of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide’s emissions that come from the production, or use of services among others that work to trap heat in the atmosphere resulting in global warming.

Some of the things to consider are the distance that you travel by your car daily, the amount of energy usage at home, and whether or not you segregate your garbage for recycling and decomposing. No matter how you fare, there is always scope to do better and live sustainably.

Carpooling is the way to go to and fro from work to reduce your emissions significantly. Travel with a co-worker in the same area and ensure that the cars are serviced regularly. If you are looking to buy a new vehicle, considering the mileage, type of fuel, and energy efficiency are also good measures to undertake. These factors can amp up your climate friendliness and help conserve precious fuel for future generations.

Simple changes in your home can also be a great way to begin your journey on the path of protecting the planet. Make sure all appliances installed in your home are energy efficient and remember to turn them off when not in use. LED lights use 85 per cent less energy but last about 25 times longer. Remember you are not only investing in your home, but also the environment. Always check the energy star rating while purchasing new products.

The age-old adage, reduce-reuse-recycle is invariably one of the best environmental practices to adopt. Reduce the amount of plastic and water in your home and always remember to segregate the garbage. In cities like Delhi and Mumbai, which receive sunshine throughout the year, come together as a community to install solar panels in your society and workplace. Adopting renewable and clean energy sources will help the earth and cut down your electricity bills.

Let, World Environment Day be a reminder that each one of us holds the power to make a significant change in the world. Build a better future through every small step possible and together we can beat the climate crisis.
