Review of Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort

Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort
The Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort lies on a hilltop in Parwanoo.

The way ahead is unclear. Clouds and mist have cloaked my vision, and the deep gorge below is unsettling, to say the least. It has been all of two minutes since I sat inside the cable car. To calm my nerves, I gaze at the trees dancing in the mountain breeze and the quiet river meandering through the valley. Not long after, the clouds part ways to reveal a glimmering hilltop. The 10-minute journey on the 1.8-kilometre-long ropeway to Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Parwanoo, is eventful in its own way. Little do I know that it is just a precursor to the many delightful experiences to unfold.

Located roughly 60 minutes away from the Chandigarh airport, this resort is tucked 1,524 metres above sea level in the Shivalik Range. My room, the Moksha Suite, makes the most of this elevation. The French windows across the king-sized bed and private balcony give a peek of the towering deodar and pine trees surrounding the resort. I eye the mountain-view bathtub in the expansive bathroom and promise myself a soak later in the day, before venturing outdoors for my main mission: rejuvenation.

Spa
The Spa at Moksha brings together Indian and Western philosophies.

The biggest draw of Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort is its 6,500 square metre wellness area. I ditch the golf cart to follow Vedic chants and bird calls and find my way to the building on foot. I begin with an Ayurvedic consultation to chalk out the day’s plan and therapies.

Truth be told, I’ve always been anxious about visiting doctors. And this time is no different. Dr Vivek Chandel, the resort’s wellness manager, eases my stress with his friendly disposition. And instead of prescribing elaborate Ayurvedic concoctions and herbal solutions, he offers achievable advice: lifestyle corrections. Next, the team leads me towards the treatment rooms. The Spa at Moksha brings together Indian and Western philosophies, drawing heavily on the sciences of Ayurveda and aromatherapy. Each spacious treatment room has been named after the body’s chakras (energetic centres). While the Abhyanga works wonders on my tired muscles, it’s the two-hour-long pampering at the full-size hammam that truly reinvigorates me.

As a hammam virgin, I sheepishly walk towards the white slab dressed in disposable inners and a towel. While the steam room may have opened all my pores, it didn’t settle the butterflies in my stomach. Luckily for me, I’m in a private chamber, unlike the traditional Turkish baths where this ancient ritual is practised in a collective.

But I’m not alone. As I lay face first on the hot marble after the steam, two masseuses start lathering me in an aromatic soap. This is followed by a hot rinse from head to toe, before breaking for another quick steam. For act two, things aren’t as tender. The synchronised movements that follow involve a rigorous scrub and exfoliation, and a Fuller’s earth body pack that is left to harden. By now all my nervousness seems to have washed away. In the last step of the ritual, the ladies douse me in lavender oil for a long, soothing massage. My hair, too, is given its share of pampering.

Himachali Dham served at Moksha Himalaya Spa Resort
The Himachali dhamis traditionally reserved for special occasions.

Post this, my stomach is growling. I head to Moksha Restaurant where Gautam Kumar, the resort’s executive chef, has prepared a traditional Himachali dham. “This thali is traditionally reserved for special occasions like marriages,” the chef explains as he places the lavish spread on the table. There’s sepu vadi, meethe chawal, rajma madra, dingri masala, buraansh ki chutney, to name few. After a royal pampering, it’s only befitting to devour this delicious feast like the queen I feel. As I sip on the last of kheru, a Kumaoni yoghurt-based drink, I notice that the clouds have parted ways to reveal the blue sky. The outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pool is glistening under the sun again and the fragrance of champa flowers is back. And just like that, everything is clear again.

Food and Dining

The multi-cuisine Moksha Restaurant offers a range of flavours. Think Thai, Oriental, Continental, and Indian. The crowning glory is the Himachali dham, prepared lovingly by Chef Gautam Kumar and team. Irrespective of the cuisine, the restaurant serves locally-sourced organic ingredients with a side of mountain views. The Moksha Bar & Lounge serves curated cocktails and mocktails concocted by in-house bartenders.
