The Northeast Frontier Railway announced a jungle tea toy train safari to boost tourism in West Bengal. We tell you more! By Aneesh Kumar
Recovering from the pandemic has been tough for the tourism sector. To boost the industry, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has introduced a jungle tea toy train safari. The train will ply from Siliguri to Rongtong. This news comes less than a week after the Darjeeling Himalayan Authority announced the resumption of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), which resumed services on August 25, 2021, after a year-and-a-half of being shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tea toy train safari is the second attempt by the NFR to boost tourism in the sector, reports Hindustan Times.

According to a News18 report, this tea toy train ride will allow tourists to soak in the mesmerising views of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. Sanjay Chilwarwar, Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM), Katihar division of NFR, told ANI that the tea toy train will run on a regular up-down basis. The train consists of a heritage steam engine along with Vistadome dining car facilities, he added. Seeing that the response from tourists has been good since the train started to run, the NFR has decided to run maximum toy trains on this route to encourage tourism, he said. On Twitter, ANI also shared a video of the train making its way through the lush greenery of the region. The video was also shared by Prasar Bharati News Services.

Speaking to ANI, Samrat Sanyal, Secretary, Himalayan Hospitality and Tourism Development Network expressed excitement at this train service, adding that NFR believes “tourists will enjoy the service and local people also get a chance to travel on weekend tours.”
However, the tea toy train is not the only surprise in works. LiveMint reports that the railway authority will also open a DHR heritage photo gallery at the Sukna station. Further, a complimentary cup of Darjeeling tea at Rongtong station will be offered to travellers to complete the experience.
