In its latest travel update, the USA has eased travel restrictions to India and has reduced it from Level 3 to Level 1. This means that India is now a low-risk travel country for Americans to visit. Here’s what it means. By Anushka Goel

The USA has finally eased travel restrictions for Americans wishing to visit India. The country, which was earlier on the USA’s list of ‘High Risk’ destinations to travel to, i.e. Level 3, has now been moved to Level 1, i.e. ‘Low Risk’ countries, reports the CDC’s website.

The USA eases India to Level 1: What it means

The USA’s department of state, while releasing this new travel advisory, said in its statement, “Your risk of contracting COVID-19 and developing severe symptoms may be lower if you are fully vaccinated with an FDA authorized vaccine,” reports India.com. Urging its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, the CDC also recommends that those visiting the country are up-to-date with their vaccines before travelling to India, and ensure that they wear well-fitting masks in indoor public places.

Further, according to the department of state, India falls in the Level 2 risk category of travel – due to the crime and terrorism in the country. This detailed guide, which can be accessed here, has taken into account not just the COVID-19 situation in the country but the level of crime and terrorism across its states, advising people to exercise caution accordingly.

The CDC, on the other hand, has also lowered Chad, Guinea and Namibia to Level 1, a report in NDTV states.

Rules for travellers visiting the USA

As of now, the rules for travellers wanting to visit the USA remain unchanged – they’re the same as of January 2022. This means that all non-USA citizens will be required to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test taken a day before travelling. However, in case you’ve recovered from the virus in the last 90 days, you may carry that documentation as proof of recovery, along with a letter from a licensed healthcare provider or a public health official stating that you were cleared to travel. Further, you’ll need to provide your contact details for effective communication.

Upon entering the USA, those travellers, including the ones from India, who are vaccinated, will be required to undergo a viral test between three to five days after arrival, self-monitor for symptoms and follow all state and local recommendations for travel. Those who are unvaccinated will have to additionally quarantine for five days.
