After UK, UAE, Australia and Singapore, Sri Lanka has now decided to ban travellers from India, in light of the current situation. The island nation, on Thursday, declared an immediate ban on travellers from India effective from May 06, 2021. While the rapidly rising COVID-19 cases in India is a contributing factor to the decision, Sri Lanka is also struggling with nearly 2,000 new COVID-19 cases every day for the last five days.
As reported by The Indian Express, the Director General Civil Aviation, in a letter to the CEO of the national carrier SriLankan Airlines, said, “In accordance with instructions received from health authorities of Sri Lanka due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation, it is hereby directed that all passengers travelling from India will not be permitted to disembark in Sri Lanka with immediate effect.”

Earlier, Sri Lanka allowed Indian passengers to disembark on its grounds and go under a 14-day quarantine before continuing their trip to West Asia and Singapore. Despite the recent rise in the number of cases in India, Sri Lanka continued to function as a transit hub for Indian passengers. The tourism authorities were also convinced about allowing Indian tourists through a travel bubble facility. However, after the recent announcement, all interaction and passenger exchange stands cancelled.
