People often tend to think that luxurious train journeys are now a thing of the past. Everybody’s comparing the food of one airline with the other, but we want to talk about the train journeys that offer as much treat to the eyes as it does to our taste palette by whipping up gourmet meals on the go. 1. Belmond British Pullman

Departing from London to various other destinations in Britain, Belmond British Pullman not only prioritises the food it serves to its passengers but makes it its signature selling point. Special themed dinners hosted by the likes of Chef Tom Kerridge (from UK’s only Michelin star public house) and Chef Anton Mosiman, the food at Belmond British Pulman can give the food of UK’s most esteemed dining places a run for their money.

2. Belmond Hiram Bingham

A ride that takes you to Macchu Picchu with the views of some of Peru’s most picturesque peaks on the Peruvian countryside, the Belmond Hiram Bingham’s food can be the sole reason for you to book yourself a seat for this journey unlike any other. The two dining cars in the train serve dishes made from locally grown ingredients like grilled Pumahuanca trout with creamy quinoa, and cheesecake made with crispy corn flour from Sacred Valley. An Andean-inspired menu including items as crispy ham flavoured with eucalyptus and beef with white grape and myrtle tartar is also on the menu. *drools*

3. Venice-Simplon-Orient Express

The most famous route of this luxury-on-wheels is that from London to Venice. The L’Etoile du Nord is one of the three dining cars on board and it serves delicacies like smoked salmon, poached eggs, Brittany lobster, tarte Tartin served with Chantilly cream. L’Oriental and Côte d’Azur are the two other dining cars whose interiors are just as exquisite as the service and the food. By the time you reach Venice, You’ll want to take the journey right back to London just to revisit the culinary treat.

4. Great Southern Rail, Australia

Tourists visiting Australia can get the hang of Australian hospitality right from the time they board the Great Southern Rail wherein the chefs work in close co-operation with the local farmers and suppliers to give the passengers a taste of the real Australia. The food and wine variants at the Queen Adelaide Restaurant is one worth travelling to Australia for. It features dishes as barramundi (Asian seabass), locally-produced beef and lamb, Margaret River cheeses, and native Australian fare such as kangaroo, saltbush and wild rosella flower.

5. The Royal Scotsman, Scotland

If the name itself says ‘royal’, then you can be sure that that’s just the treatment you are going to receive at the Royal Scotsman, which marks its journey from Edinburgh into the Western Highlands and back. On board are two dining cars with live entertainment on the lounge. The menu consists of local delicacies such as Scottish smoked salmon rolls filled with crab mousse, cullen skink (a thick soup of smoked haddock, potatoes and onion), Aberdeen Angus fillet of beef and an expansive shortbread variety. How do you like the sound of whisky porridge, tattie scones, black pudding and kippers for breakfast?
