In what may come as a bummer for many, the Tamil Nadu government has decided to keep COVID-19 restrictions in place till December 31. The state has also banned entry to all its gorgeous beaches on New Year. By Karan Kaushik
The move comes amidst the rising concerns against Omicron, the new variant of the dreadful coronavirus. State governments across the country are taking stock of the situation and leaving no stone unturned to prevent the threatful variant from spreading.

The beach ban in Tamil Nadu will only be effective on December 31 and January 1. The decision aims at preventing large crowds from gathering at the beach to welcome the new year. The state government has also announced that a strict penalty will be levied against those found in violation of the state’s COVID protocols.

According to a report published in the English daily Times of India, the state will continue to impose a ban on all social, cultural, and political activities till December 31. However, some places like swimming pools and event halls will be allowed to operate. The lockdown extension has been implemented keeping in mind the guidelines received by the state government from the Union government.
“There will be no access to people to all the beaches on December 31, 2021, and January 1, 2022, as part of the measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19,” news agency PTI quoted Chief Minister MK Stalin from an official release.
The MK Stalin-led government also plans to implement the test-track-vaccinate strategy to tackle the new variant. Citizens will be expected to adhere to COVID-19 appropriate behaviour. The government has also guided different district administrations in the state to implement all the required safety measures. Door-to-door surveys will also be organised in areas that have been turned into containment zones.
