SS Cotopaxi, a ship believed to have disappeared in the mysterious Bermuda Triangle back in 1925, has now been recovered after 95 years of the tragedy

The American ship that set sail off the Charleston South Carolina on November 29, 1925, so as to deliver a shipment of coal to Havana, Cuba, never arrived at the location, and its 32 crew members were also declared missing.

Even after extensive investigation, no trace of wreckage was discovered, making it one of the biggest secrets of Bermuda Triangle.

Records suggest that a distressed signal that was sent out on December 1, 1925, was picked up in Jacksonville, Florida, thereby placing the ship in the area which for 35 years has been called the ‘Bear Wreck’, off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida.

Upon examination, striking similarities were found between the layout of SS Cotopaxi and the underwater wreckage.

This latest discovery has been made by marine biologist and shipwreck explorer Michael Barnette and his team while filming Science Channel’s newly launched show Shipwreck Secrets, scheduled for a debut on February 9. According to Barnette two theories that might have caused the shipwreck are either an unexpected storm or a ship that wasn’t well equipped to handle the dangerous weather.

In a 1977 Steven Spielberg‘s classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Cotopaxi has been shown to have reappeared in the middle of the Gobi Desert.

The Bermuda Triangle is a loosely defined portion of the Atlantic stretching roughly from Miami to Bermuda to Puerto Rico. As many as 75 planes and hundreds of ships are believed to have gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle under mysterious circumstances.
