Fireflies, which have made Maharashtra their home, come out this month in millions, emitting their shimmering light to attract the opposite sex. If you want to witness this phenomenon, you can head to places such as Rajmachi Village, Siddhagad Wadi, Prabalmachi village, Bhandardara, Ghatghar, Kothaligad, Kondane Caves, Igatpuri, Purushwadi and more, where trip organisers are hosting camps throughout the month-long event, writes Native Planet.
You can opt for a one day/one night package, complete with hiking, trekking, camping and firefly walks at night – and don’t worry, the creatures do not sting or bite.
Where to witness fireflies at night in Maharashtra
Check out these treks and camps, which will allow you to witness the enchanting little creatures in their full glory:
- Purushwadi Fireflies Festival
- Rajmachi Fireflies Trek & Camp
- Rajmachi bike ride and fireflies festival
- Fireflies Photography Boot Camp – Bhandardara
- Bhandardara Fireflies Camping
- Malshej Ghat Fireflies Camping
These quiet regions provide the least amount of light and sound disturbances, making it the optimum environment for fireflies to come out. What’s more, these allow for some stunning images, too, playing with the contrast of light and dark. For about two months right before monsoon, the bugs come out and lay their eggs, which is why they emit light to attract partners.
