These unreserved coaches were earlier converted to reserved ones amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, to reduce overcrowding. Only passengers who possessed confirmed tickets could board these coaches. However, now, these unreserved coaches are back, albeit with some conditions. According to The Live Nagpur, you will need to possess a seasonal ticket to travel in these unreserved coaches in Nagpur. Also, there are no separate coaches for these ticket holders. And all passengers will have to follow the state and central government protocols set in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.
The Times of India quoted SECR officials as saying, “Even as trains were restored with regular numbers, unreserved coaches were not restored. Though current tickets were available in MEMU-DEMU trains, the same facility was not available for mail/express trains from current booking counters.” And now, passengers can buy tickets from the unreserved ticket system (UTS) counters and travel in these coaches. “In SECR, unreserved ticket facility has been restored with immediate effect in 16 trains,” the officials added.
These unreserved coaches have also been added to some popular express trains, such as the Howrah-CSMT Mail, Secunderabad-Darbhanga, and Howrah-CSMT Gitanjali, Hatia-Pune among others. Some other routes, including CSMT-Howrah, Ahmedabad Howrah, Gondia-Kolhapur Maharashtra and more will get these unreserved coaches after June 29, 2022, the Times of India report adds.
