Gujarat might not have an IPL (Indian Premier League) team to its name anymore, but it can boast of having the world’s largest cricket stadium instead, thanks to the recently renamed Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. By Bayar Jain

As with everything else in Gujarat lately, the latest addition in their reservoir of all things record-breaking is the Narendra Modi Stadium (earlier the Sardar Patel Stadium) in Ahmedabad. Also called the Motera Cricket Stadium, this ground is in the race to be the biggest in the world with a whopping seating capacity of 1,32,000 people, which is more than the Melbourne Cricket Ground–the current largest stadium, which can seat 1,00,024 fans. Earlier speculations arose that Donald Trump, the President of United States of America would be inaugurating the stadium on February 24, however, the same proved to be merely rumours. Instead, the stadium was inaugurated on February 24 by President Ram Nath Kovind, along with Union Home Minister, Amit Shah.

Cricket aside, the massive stadium is also expected to serve as a catalysis for basketball, football, boxing, hockey, squash, billiards, badminton, swimming, and lawn tennis enthusiasts as well. Moreover, it is expected to have separate team meeting rooms, four dressing rooms, three practice grounds, an indoor cricket academy, and even an Olympic-sized swimming pool. So gigantic is stadium size that the parking lot can accommodate 4,000 cars and 10,000 two-wheelers. Seventy-five corporate boxes, along with distinct entry and exit arrangements at the venue add to the grandiose.

Spread over 63 acres, and reportedly built at a cost of INR 700 crore, this stadium has another feather to add to its hat–the first stadium to be lit up using LED lights, and boasts of being the world’s largest sports stadium. Moreover, its proximity to the metro line also makes it easier for people to travel to the stadium using public transport, in turn helping curb carbon emissions as well.
