It’s that time of the year again when the doors of Rashtrapati Bhavan’s gardens open for the general public. The lawns, which were called Mughal Gardens, have been renamed to Amrit Udyan and are currently hosting Udyan Utsav 2023.
President of India Droupadi Murmu inaugurated the event on January 29, and it was thrown open to the public two days later. The Utsav 2023 will end on March 26. Visitors can walk around the lawns as they soak in the beauty of the blooms, trees and herbs there.

The new name was given to the gardens by President Murmu as part of 75 years of independence (Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav) celebrations, media reports state. The garden, this time, around will also be opened exclusively for the differently-abled, farmers and women on certain reserved days.

Amrit Udyan features 15 acres of lush greenery, complete with herbal plants, decades-old bonsais and a variety of fresh blooms in all colours, shapes and forms. These are spread across various lawns, including East Lawn, Central Lawn, Long Garden and Circular Garden. Sections such as Herbal-I, Herbal-II, Tactile Garden, Bonsai Garden and Arogya Vanam, which were developed during the terms of former presidents Dr A P J Abdul Kalam and Ram Nath Kovind, are now also open to visitors.
Amrit Udyan takes inspiration from the Mughal Gardens in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as the beautiful lawns of the Taj Mahal and miniature paintings of India and Persia, mentions the Rashtrapati Bhavan’s official website while mentioning the gardens. What’s more, the sprawling lawns feature 12 varieties of tulips, 120 varieties of roses, rows of hyacinths, marigolds, dahlias, and even a 200-year-old sheesham tree, which is the true highlight of the space. Musical fountains and vertical gardens add to the aesthetic beauty of the space this time around. Also, there are QR codes set up next to the plants for visitors to quickly scan and learn more about them.

However, Amrit Udyan will remain closed on all Mondays for maintenance. Additionally, the gardens will also remain off-limits on March 1 and 2 because of the G-20 meetings and on March 8 on account of Holi.
Timings: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm; each visitor will get an hour-long slot to visit. Last entry at 4:00 pm
How to book tickets: There is no ticket fee, but you will have to book your slots beforehand – either on the President of India’s website or through offline visitor registration kiosks at the venue.
