Here’s a piece of good news for all trekkers out there. Soon, you can trek to Pindari, Kafni, and Sunderdhunga glaciers in the Kumaon region. By Karan Kaushik

Glacier treks in Uttarakhand will open soon; here are the details

According to a news report published in Times Travel, the Uttarakhand Tourism Department has announced that it will permit trekkers to climb the glaciers between April 15 and June 15. The report said that officials are gearing up to welcome trekkers, and necessary preparations are being made.

The news has come as a relief to the trekking industry in Kumaon. The state had resumed glacier trekking for a brief while after the first and second waves of COVID-19. However, due to a lukewarm response from trekkers, the trekking industry couldn’t get the necessary boost.

With COVID-19 restrictions being eased now, officials of the Uttarakhand Tourism Department have decided to resume the glacier treks. The move is aimed at reviving the trekking industry as authorities are hopeful that the state will witness a rise in the number of glacier trekkers. The treks will be closed in the monsoons. They will be re-opened from September 15 to October 15.

Uttarakhand is a trekker’s paradise. According to reports, Kumaon used to attract around 3,000 trekkers every year in the pre-pandemic times. The Pindari glacier trek is one of the most popular and easiest treks among all glacier treks in India.

Meanwhile, the famous Valley Of Flowers Trek in the Chamoli district will also be reopened on June 1. It will remain accessible till October 31. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Valley of Flowers National Park is known for its alpine meadows and a variety of flora that covers its expanse. The rich diversity of the area also translates to the rare and endangered animals, including the likes of the ever-evading snow leopard, blue sheep, black bear, and more that call this park their home.
