India’s beloved beach destination has added a slew of buzz-worthy events to its tourism calendar for 2022. On the itinerary for tourists heading to Goa is the popular EDM festival Sunburn, endurance race Ironman 70.3, and an eco-music festival. Here’s everything you need to know. By Eshita Srinivas
Your next visit to the tropical paradise Goa could include electronic music or a sports event. The region’s tourism board recently granted in-principle approval for a few events of international standards for the year. This includes the Sunburn music festival, RFC India International Water Sport Challenge, Ironman 70.3, and an eco-music festival. With this, it hopes to restore the revenue-generating tourism sector after a rough period during the pandemic.

Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte stated that the approval was based on the condition that the organisers of both, Sunburn and the eco-music festival, would allow Goan musicians to participate. This, he stated, is irrespective of whether they are DJs, bands, or individual talents.
“We told them that if they want they can plan the festival for four days instead of three. But there should be a stage for Goan musicians. It should not be just an Electronic Dance Music (EDM) festival,” he was quoted saying by Free Press Journal. “The Sunburn team who gave a presentation of their event have understood and accepted our overall concept,” he added.

On the heels of this, Khanute stated that the organisers of the eco-music festival have been asked to spotlight Goan culture as well, while maintaining their original theme. The response, he noted, was positive. Besides this, the meeting was held to discuss future events including addressing challenges around commissioning of the new international airport at Mopa and other investment proposals pending approval.
Sunburn is a commercial electronic dance music festival in India that calls Vagator, Goa its home ground. It also happens to be Asia’s largest music festival. This year, it will be held on December 28, 29, and 30. To book your passes, visit the official website here.
