India may get its first tilting trains by 2025. About 100 such Vande Bharat trains are under construction, and if all goes to plan, reports have it that by 2025-26, these trains will hit the track. Here are the details. 

According to news reports, India is set to get its first tilting trains by 2025-2026. These trains will add to the growing catalogue of railways in India, enabling newer experiences and a whole other journey for travellers. News agency PTI quoted a Railways official saying, “We will have tilting trains in the country. We will tie up with a technology partner for this. We will have this technology in 100 Vande Bharat trains over the next two to three years,” writes NDTV.

The technology helps these carriers manoeuvre through curves at much higher speed, creating an experience akin to riding a motorbike on a winding road, reports state. These trains are under construction at the moment, and will be a part of the Vande Bharat trains that India is releasing onto tracks at the moment, news reports add.

The railways are in conversation with Spanish manufacturer Talgo, along with the Switzerland government, for these trains, reports state. A report in Mint notes an official as saying, “We will have tilting trains in the country. We will tie up with a technology partner for this. We will have this technology in 100 Vande Bharat trains over the next two to three years.”

But what are tilting trains? When trains curve, it makes objects (and even people) slide or feel squashed. However, these trains come equipped with a mechanism that allows the trains to tilt when on a curved track, to aid to the comfort of passengers seated inside. So, the inclusion of these tilting trains in India will help the carriages run on curved tracks at a higher speed, especially on the regular broad gauge tracks.
