What When Wear’s Aanam Chashmawala is a true-blue Bombay girl who wouldn’t give up her city for anything. We caught up with the fashion and beauty influencer on her recommendations for a Mumbai newbie, future of conscious travelling, and why Mumbai will always have her heart. By Amitha Ameen

1. Where were you when the lockdown was announced?

I was at home, thankfully.

2. What have you been up to during the lockdown? Did you learn any new skills?

I have been cooking now more than ever and enjoying it and, of course, continuing to work from home.

3. What have you missed the most during this time (apart from travelling)?

Well, you stole the main one. But I have also missed my family and friends a lot! I am never saying no to a Friday night plan ever again.

4. How do you ensure to stay positive and motivated during these unprecedented times?

Honestly, I started working out from home a little late in the game. I missed and sulked over missing the gym for so long that I finally gave in and pulled out the mat to workout at home; soon I realised my mood was so much better on those days. Apart from that, my husband’s company and reading books are also keeping me sane.

5. In what ways has this pandemic impacted your life and work?

Well work-wise, of course, for a while it had come to a complete halt. Life wise, I missed my parents’ anniversary and father’s day, which broke my heart – but in general, in the larger scheme of things, I guess this lockdown has made me even more grateful for all the privileges we have and that we must do everything in our capacity to help anyone we can.

6. Where will you travel to first when it is safe to do so?

I would love to go back to Los Angeles or Queensland.

7. What is the first thing that catches your attention when you arrive at a place?

How people dress.

8. What three experiences will you recommend to a Mumbai newbie?

A roadside Vada Pav, a drive by the Marine Drive, and Juhu Beach on a crowded, sunny Sunday.

9. If you had to pick one city in India apart from Mumbai, which one would it be and why?

Oh no, Mumbai is meri jaan (my love). I wouldn’t dare to cheat on this city for the world.

10. What changes do you anticipate in the travel industry in the post-Corona world?

I definitely hope to see more people be responsible for how they travel, more maintenance of hygiene, less wastage, and hopefully, more appreciation for nature.

11. Do you think conscious travelling/slow travelling will take the centre-stage post-Corona?

I definitely hope so! It is heartbreaking to see what’s happening in Mauritius. I was there last year. In fact, I visited this beautiful, slow-travel resort called Zeavola last December in Krabi, that’s all about zero wastage. No plastic, barefoot-in-the-sand kind of a place, and I’m keen to encourage more people in my circle to try more of that!

12. Which is your favourite city in India and why?

Mumbai. It’s got that beautiful mix of history, heritage, and new age-ness that’s unparalleled. It is chaotic, but if you’ve lived here long enough, you’ll be able to see the beauty in it too.

13. Where was the last place you travelled to?

Thailand, Krabi and Zeavola in December 2019.

14. You recently posted throwback pictures from your Turkey vacay. What are the three must-try experiences there?

I was in Turkey in March 2019, which was my second trip to the country in general but the first in terms of exploring more cities other than just Istanbul. The hot air balloon ride in Cappadocia, a stroll around the gardens and streets of Taksim in Istanbul and cycling around the city of Antalya along with exploring the hot springs in Pammukale were some of my top experiences in Turkey.

15. Your favourite Indian road trip?

I wish I could say it was the one from Chandigarh to Shimla, but that one just made me sick with the windy roads. So I’m going to stick to the very cliché experience of driving from Mumbai to Goa, which a few of us friends did about six years ago.

16. Three things you absolutely cannot travel without?

My vlogging camera, my skincare essentials and my emergency kit.

17. What are some of the things you will definitely keep in mind while travelling in the post-Corona era?

My biggest fear, to be honest, is that I am going to turn into the most paranoid (albeit, clean and hygienic) traveller ever.
