Billionaire entrepreneur Jeff Bezos is going sightseeing—to space! On July 20, as the founder of the rocket company Blue Origin, Bezos and his brother will be among the first few people in the world to undertake a suborbital trip in New Shepard’s (the company spacecraft) first crewed flight.
Just 15 days after his resignation as the CEO of Amazon, his excursion to space will be a milestone in the commercial space travel sector. Among other space tycoons like Elon Musk (SpaceX, CEO) and Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic, CEO), Bezos will be the first multi-billionaire to experience this revolutionary rocket technology. Both Musk and Branson have announced their intentions to board their own ships and capsules to space later in the year.
New Shepard will fly out six people autonomously. Designed as a rocket-and-capsule combination, it will go 100 kilometres above Earth, high enough for passengers to experience weightlessness for a few minutes and witness the curvature of the planet. It will be a short 10- to 11-minutes trip, including the four minutes that space-goers will spend above the Kármán line, that is, the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space. The capsule, which will feature six seats and huge observation windows, will then return home in parachutes.
Named after Alan Shepard, the first American who went into space, the vehicle has undergone extensive testing and safety checking. It has had 15 test missions and three escape tests, all successful. With proper training and all measures in place, Blue Origin is ready to fly out.

“Ever since I was five years old, I’ve dreamed of travelling to space. On July 20, I will take that journey with my brother. The greatest adventure, with my best friend. To see the Earth from space, it changes you. I want to go on this flight because it’s a thing I’ve wanted to do all my life… It’s a big deal for me,” says Bezos in an Instagram post, talking about his passion for space.
One thing is for certain—this exclusive trip is one for ultra-rich adventure seekers with big bucks to spare. The brothers will be joined by an auction winner. With nearly 6,000 participants from across 136 countries, the bidding reportedly hit USD 3.2 million. The month-long process will last till June 10 and will conclude with an online live auction on June 12. There is no information on the prices of the regular tickets yet. The money collected will be donated to Club for the Future, a foundation by Blue Origin.
