When it comes to female designers in India, Anamika Khanna is sure to spring up as one of the firsts in the list. In a tête-à-tête with us, she tells all about her work, her inspirations, and how travelling blends itself in her designs. By Bayar Jain

Conventional runway shows are a thing of the past, courtesy the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2019. For its 15th edition, a new face of fashion revealed itself. During the three-city tour, three themes — Craft, Blend and Identity — worked in sync to create a universe of pride. Among the multiple celebrated designers who showcased their work is Anamika Khanna, an Indian designer who skillfully blends traditional Indian textiles and techniques with Western silhouette and tailoring. In a conversation with us at the preview of Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2019, she talks about this collaboration, designs, and travels.

1. Tell us a little bit about your collaboration with Blenders Pride Fashion Tour 2019.

Anamika Khanna

It’s very interesting. For one, I feel quite proud to be associated with them. The theme that I’ve been given is ‘My craft’, and that is something that comes from within my heart. So, it’s a very interesting collaboration. I’m not just proud to be collaborating, but also really excited about this.

2. What’s your take on the 2019 Blenders Pride Fashion Tour theme?

Anamika Khanna

I’m taking the theme of ‘My Craft, My Pride’ and I’m relating with it because the clothes are going to be completely craft based. They are also going to be completely modern, young, vibrant, energetic, and really cool. It’s almost like a juxtaposition of two different worlds, where you take age-old techniques from everywhere and sort of blend them into something more relevant and more modern. It’s almost like two diametrically opposite things coming together.

3. Where do you usually travel for your design inspirations, and why?

You know, sometime the inspiration just comes to you. Sometimes you travel, sometimes you come across beautiful textiles… And sometimes, you just come across a beautiful colour. It’s not like you have to travel to a certain place to get inspired. It could be from anywhere.

4. What’s your take on sustainable fashion, and do you see a rise in consumer awareness regarding the same?

I think it’s a very important take. In this collection with Blenders Pride, I’m also trying to integrate that fashion and sustainability are two ideas that go together. We’re trying to recycle some materials from previous collections. Besides, the fact that we want to create pieces that are timeless and you can use it again and again — and not necessarily use it as that one single ensemble. You keep it for keeps.

5. How are you incorporating sustainability in your label?

No matter what we do, there is this small understanding that we need to create good quality, timeless clothes; not just things that you buy and throw off simply because they’ve gone out of fashion.

6. When it comes to Indian styles and patterns like Ikkat, Phulkari, Chikankari, and more, which one is your favourite and why?

Right now, I’m mixing different crafts from different places and I find that very interesting. I’m blending a bit of Kantha, with some embroidery from Kutch. Its like a marriage from different crafts from everywhere. That’s very interesting at the moment.

7. Being a woman, have you faced any hardships while travelling?

No. I mean, I think I’ve been okay.
