South Korea has quite a lot of islands with gorgeous landscapes in its name. And while each of them is as gorgeous as they come, here are the five most sought-after island destinations in South Korea that will make for a perfect island getaway. By Yagnoseni Das

Although not yet confirmed by the show, a lot of people have been speculating that the “Heaven Island” contestants of Netflix‘s popular dating show Singles’s Inferno are flown to is none other than Saseungbong- do island located in Incheon’s Ongjin County in South Korea. The dreamy visuals of the island have sure grabbed a lot of eyes and have become one of the most sought-after destinations thanks to the show’s popularity.

However, the private island is not as accessible right now, considering the only way to reach its shores is by fishing boats that do not set sail during the winters. So, while we wait for the island to be out and open to accept tourists, here are five stunning islands in South Korea that can rival the Saseungbong-do island.

5 gorgeous islands in South Korea that you can visit

Jeju Island

Several complimentary titles under its belt like, ‘South Korea’s Hawaii’ and ‘Island of the Gods’, Jeju Island is one of the most sought-after destinations among travellers. The largest South Korean island is home to natural wonders like lava tubes, Hallsan, the shield volcano etc. The name ‘Island of the Gods’ comes from the belief that the island was once home to the demigods.

The nature bound island is filled with gorgeous beaches, Woljeogri and Jungmun being the most popular among travellers. Pick your activity of choice from the vast options the island provides. You can set up for day tours to explore the gorgeous natural wonders of the island, or go to the famous Teddy Bear Museum and Theme park and the Jeju Maze land, or take a day to indulge in Jeju’s rich culinary offerings in its many gastronomical spots.

U-do island or the U- island, located 3.5 kilometres off the eastern coast, is a popular spot for tourists who travel to Jeju. The island is filled with scenic beaches of white sand, black sand and rock formations, peaks, flower fields and several lighthouses that adds to the endearing visual of the island.

There are several ways to explore the island. Rental cars are not generally allowed to enter the island, but there are certain exceptions which one can enquire with the Jeju Tourist Information Center. Apart from that, you can explore the island by renting ATVs, bikes, and scooters, given you have your passport and license with you.

This volcanic island lies in the east of mainland South Korea and has amassed a considerable amount of popularity among nature-loving tourists. This pristine and serene island, also known as South Korea’s ‘Mystery Island’ due to its mystical energy, is believed to have been formed after several volcanic eruptions 2.5 million years ago. The island also sees quite a lot of snow that provides for stunning scenery of snowy mountains.

Among the many ways to explore this rich island is to set for the Gwaneum Island hiking trail. The one-hour trek takes its trekkers through the pedestrian suspension bridge, the island Gwaneumdo, lush ancient reed forests, fairy rocks, and eventually the sea. Another significant attraction on the island is the Nari Basin Geopark.

The waters surrounding the island also offer numerous water activities such as scuba diving, fishing, kayaking, and more. This also makes the island rich in its seafood culinary, and we recommend trying out as many delicacies as you can upon your visit to this island.

Geoje Island

Nestled in the stunning hub of Geo city in the Gyeongsangnam-do province, Geoje island has a rich biosphere with an abundance of flora and fauna. The Hakdong beach is a pretty sight and unlike your regular beaches as its shores are adorned with millions of pebbles instead of sand. Travellers can travel around in cars and buses and have a wide option of city tour packages. Although there are quite a lot of sites worth visiting on the mainland island, several attractions lie in the smaller islands of Geoje. Travellers can visit those islands on a ferry that are available in each of the island’s port. You can enjoy the picturesque waters and cliffs while making your way to the islands on the ferry.

And upon your visit, savouring the seafood fresh out of the water in the sashimi restaurants is a must, Dodari Ssukguk, Gul gui, and Sashimi being some of the island signatures.

Nami Island

A popular getaway destination for travellers, Nami island saw a surge in its popularity, courtesy of the South Korean TV drama Winter Sonata. An ideal holiday destination throughout the year, the island offers a variation of gorgeous views based on the current season. In the spring, cherry blossoms adorn the island with a beautiful colour of pink, while the winter turns covers the island with a stunning blanket of white snow. Families can spend their day in leisure around the many parks spread across the island and catch sight of ducks, ostriches, and rabbits meandering around.

Visitors can explore the island in rental bikes that are available. And if you want to feel a little bit of the sea and the wind in your hair, head to the ports to rent yourself a motorboat. You can also board the fun little train that goes through the entrance of the Song Museum and the central station in the town’s main square. And the best thing about this is that the proceeds go to the Korean Committee for UNICEF to help children in need.
