Germany releases the Beethoven calendar to mark the musical genius’ 250th birth anniversary and dedicates the entire year to his life and some great symphonies. By Tanvi Jain
Since October 2019: The Beethoven Story – A guided Beethoven walking tour in Bonn and the surrounding region
This outdoor multimedia tour covers the time the composer spent in his home city and the Rhein-Sieg region and takes in 22 authentic Beethoven locations that are publicly accessible.
November 21, 2019 – September 13, 2020: Music! Hearing – making – feeling
This comprehensive interactive exhibition at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn examines the anthropological origins of music and explores its universal functions on our planet.
December 16, 2019: Reopening of the Beethoven House in Bonn
One of the world’s most popular museums dedicated to the composer has reopened. The Beethoven House will include additional 340-square meters of floor space, with its redesigned permanent exhibition, offering a contemporary and interactive Beethoven experience.
In 2020, the Dresden State Orchestra will launch a Beethoven cycle comprising the First to Fifth Symphonies
The orchestra’s Beethoven interpretations first came to prominence under the conductorship of Richard Wagner, whose performances of the Ninth Symphony in the Palm Sunday concerts from 1846 onwards have gone down in classical music history.
January 1– December 17, 2020: Freiburg
The city of Freiburg is home to a remarkable variety of orchestras run by the students and for the students. Eight of the best student symphony orchestras will be performing a series of concerts featuring Beethoven’s all nine symphonies.

Beethoven’s chamber music is being performed in its entirety for the first time.

March 14 – May 3, 2020: Beethoven’s Mother’s House, Koblenz, My son Ludwig
This evocative play, performed in the house where Beethoven’s mother Maria Magdalena was born and where she died, features a pianist and the composer’s music.
April 14, 2020: Osnabrückhalle
The German National Youth Orchestra begins its Easter session with Beethoven’s Third Symphony, Eroica, along with a new work by Mark Barden that was specially commissioned for BTHVN 2020 by the German Music Council.
June 12, 2020: Open-air opera at Schwerin Castle, Fidelio
For the Schlossfestspiele festival, Beethoven’s only opera is performed against the magnificent backdrop of this historic residence set in the middle of a lake.
June 20, 2020: A celebration of Beethoven in the gardens of Rheinsberg Palace
Distinguished ensembles and the up-and-coming young soloists of the Rheinsberg Chamber Opera perform in an outstanding event for the Beethoven anniversary year that links music and nature, and features both famous as well as seldom-heard works.
July 5, 2020: MDR Summer of Music, Schloss Waldenburg, Young Talent 3
Winners of the EnviaM music competition perform works by Beethoven and Dvořák with two MDR musicians, Vera and Norbert Hilger, at Schloss Waldenburg.

The German National Youth Orchestra and the World Youth Choir start their 2020 summer tour in Bonn by combining Beethoven’s masterpiece with the premiere of a work by Tan Dun.
August 30, 2020: The Ninth Symphony at the Festival Theatre, Bayreuth
In 1872, Richard Wagner conducted the Ninth Symphony at the Margravial Opera House to celebrate the laying of the foundation stone for the Festival Theater. There were further performances to mark the resumption of the festival in 1951, for the 150th anniversary of Wagner’s birth in 1963, and in 2001 for the 50th anniversary of the New Bayreuth.
