The Kerala government from November 1 — Kerala Piravi Day — has allowed beaches to once again start inviting people under the ongoing second phase of the reopening of tourism centres across the state. Earlier, in the first phase, it had reopened hill stations, backwater tourism, houseboats and adventure resorts, from October 12, with all the required COVID-19 safety guidelines in place.

As reported by The Hindu, Tourism Secretary Rani George said, “The response in destinations that resumed operations from October 10 has been encouraging, with footfalls gradually increasing.”

Talking of the preparations, the state government has installed boards featuring dos and don’ts across all tourist destinations. All walkways, handrails and shelters to be thoroughly sanitised at regular intervals. Tourism Police to be deployed as per requirement. All parks and museums are advised to opt for online ticketing/booking methods to reduce contact. Vehicles to not be allowed to be parked at a parking area for more than one hour at a stretch, and all street vendors to follow the required COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Hindu also quoted Tourism Minister Kadakampally Surendran, as saying, “It is significant that we are reopening our beaches, including destinations such as Kovalam.”

The government has also released a list of SOPs for visitors, according to which they will be required to wear a mask at all times, use soaps and sanitisers at frequent intervals, and follow social distancing. While tourists arriving for a stay of fewer than seven days can skip the quarantine, all visitors must register themselves on the COVID-19 Jagratha portal.
