Best Day Trips From Kolkata: Make Your Weekends Worthwhile!

It is said that Calcuttans devour their big family get-together lunches with as much mirth as they enjoy planning for holidays with family and friends. For everyone who is looking for just the shortest getaway to revive the senses, here’s a list of day trips that should work wonders. By Shubhanjana Das

1. Henry’s Island

Birdwatchers, here is your chance to take the day off and have a rendezvous with the winged buddies here at Henry’s Island, situated at a distance of 130 kms from Kolkata. The island is frequented by many a species. It’s a mangrove forest located on the western edge of Sundarban and is one of the most favourite weekend destinations for the locals.

2. Bishnupur

If you want to explore the architectural brilliance that is hidden in small villages in West Bengal, you must make a trip to Bishnupur, which is a four hour’s train ride away from Howrah. The terracotta temples built in ‘Bengali hut’ style attract tourists and architecture enthusiasts from all over the country, and for good reason. Ras Mancha, Jor Bangla, Madan Mohan Temple and Shyam Rai Temple are some of the temples you should check out during your day’s trip. Don’t forget to check out their Baluchari saris and terracotta horses, widely popular throughout the nation.

3. Junput

Combine a solitary getaway to a beach with a culinary one at this fishing village called Junput, 153 kms from Kolkata. After a three hour’s drive from the city, you will find yourself at a beach that is nothing like the crowed ones of Digha or Mandarmani. There’s not much to this place, which is also its highlight. Why? Well, it’s the perfect place to do nothing. And we all know how important it is to do nothing from time to time.

4. Raichak

Did you know that you could visit and stay in ancient forts just 50 kms away from Kolkata? Raichak is one such small village, which has now become a serious attraction for people of West Bengal for a day trip. The amalgam of luxury with slow rural life pace will fill your senses with the peacefulness you have been yearning for.

5. Bawali

Just 35 kms from Kolkata is the small census town of Budge Budge, which is a hamlet of rural Bengali aesthetics and vibe. Stay at a real Rajbari at Bawali where you will be treated with nothing less than a royal treatment. Perfect for a family getaway, Bawali is set back in time where people still move at a pace of their own.
