An outdoor exhibition on Long Island redefined how art can be displayed during the current crisis. Artists installed their pieces on properties of residents along Hampton Bays to Montauk. Among the themes, social isolation remained most popular. By Manya Saini
All of us under isolation and lockdown could do with a dose of culture. A group of 52 artists in Long Island, New York, organised an out-of-the-box drive-through exhibition to fill the gap. The exhibition added to the innovation of their features by enabling locals to view the artwork while keeping a safe distance from each other.

The show titled, “Drive-By-Art (Public Art in This Moment of Social Distancing)” included installations of roadside sculptures, live performances, videos projected on the sides of buildings and paintings installed along the existing landscape of the area.
The organisers released an online map detailing the various locations where different team members had displayed their work. All of the participating artists lived in the South Fork area of long island, a vibrant and world-renowned community famed for being a tapestry for diverse cultures. Among many who took part in the exhibition were Toni Ross, Jeremy Dennis, Ryan Wallace, Alice Hope, and Eric Fischl.
The artists were looking to show their interpretations of the new realities brought to the world by Coronavirus and how the lockdown impacted their daily life. The team according to an official statement was trying to “intensify the poetic voice of artistic practice above the din and cacophony of fear that suffocates us.”

Over the last few months, many ingenious and enterprising independent artists and innovators have found ways to communicate the crisis through their work while ensuring the safety of the spectators. Artists in Berlin had transformed their balconies into an exhibition while a myriad of museums has launched virtual tours to give the world a much-needed taste of culture.
