It’s a common dilemma most travellers face when booking a dream vacation: how many days are you going stay in one place? It’s a choice that can be the difference between having perfectly enjoyed the visit to a city and being somewhere just a little too long.

This week, the dilemma spilt over into an online discourse on Reddit where hundreds of travellers weighed in on which cities require the most amount of days to visit, and which can be skipped over.

This is how much time you need to spend while visiting these cities

One of the top cities that travellers felt needed extra time is Tokyo. The city has a population of 14 million across 847 square miles (2,193.72 square kilometres) while for comparison, New York City is only 468 square miles (1,212.11 square kilometres).

“Definitely Tokyo, if we’re counting the Tokyo Metropolis. Just the city proper requires 10-14 days to explore its variety and sprawl,” one traveller wrote in support of the Japanese city in the tread.

London took the top spot as being the city most travellers feel needs extra time to explore.

“Lived in London for 10 years and went out exploring every single weekend and still haven’t seen it all,” another traveller wrote.

Mexico City, named one of the top 10 destinations in 2023 by Travel + Leisure, was another popular hotspot that travellers felt needed more than a few days to properly explore.

“CDMX (Mexico City) is one of the most complicated places on earth, and I lived there for months and I still didn’t really understand most of it. And I speak fluent Spanish!

There can be strategies to help maximise your time in a city, even if you have fewer days than you want to explore. Specifically, when visiting Europe, travel experts recommend spending time outside of the main city centre. While there may be a lot to explore within the main city, an hour’s drive outside of the city could provide additional experiences such as local cuisine or hiking opportunities.
