The second phase of lockdown implemented by the Indian government to prevent the spread of Coronavirus is supposed to end on May 3. But there are talks of extending the same due to the increasing number of infected patients. While some states are in favour of the extension, others believe that there should be relaxation for areas that are not in the red zones.

According to reports, Punjab is extending the lockdown beyond May 3 for two more weeks. New guidelines have been formulated by the state government for the coming days. Curfew in the state will be relaxed from 7 am to 11 am so that people can get back to industrial work. Further relaxations will depend on the number of confirmed cases and infected patients. Punjab Chief Minister Capt. Amarinder Singh stated that the advice of the expert committee set up to formulate the lockdown exit strategy and opening up of the state will be taken.

Telangana has extended the lockdown until May 7, four days more than the nationwide lockdown. With a surging number of cases, states such as Odisha, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Madhya Pradesh are also ready to extend the lockdown with no relaxations in the major hotspot districts.

On the other hand, the Tamil Nadu government has ended the total shutdown imposed in Chennai, Madurai, and Coimbatore. Due to a rise in COVID-19 cases in the state, a complete shutdown was implemented for four days starting April 26. Grocery shops were also closed during this time. Few relaxations have now been announced for businesses selling essentials. Vendors selling fruits and vegetables were allowed to set up shop on April 30 from 6 am to 5 pm. The state is returning to the nationwide lockdown until further government announcements.

Till now, India has registered over 35,000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus. The lockdown has helped in flattening the curve and slowing down the virus, with some states such as Goa, Tripura, and Manipur confirming to be COVID-19 free.
