The Caribbean island is readying itself to welcome travellers, after closing its borders due to the Coronavirus pandemic. “Firstly, we have introduced a ‘travel bubble’ concept comprising low-risk countries based on a risk assessment of the countries from which persons are seeking to enter Jamaica and the travel routes which they will take,” said Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness through his twitter account.

The country plans on reopening the tourism industry in a five-point recovery strategy that ensures a ‘safe, seamless, and secure experience.’ To manage the movement of tourists better, the country has come up with an ingenious ‘Coronavirus-resilient corridor.’ “This gives Jamaica the ability to manage and trace the movement of tourists along the stretch of road from Negril through Port Antonio on the northern coast of the island,” added Holness.

Non-Jamaican travellers wishing to enter the country will have to follow a risk-based protocol and remain within the designated zone, issued by the authorities. The Caribbean nation is also ensuring that workers in the tourism industry go through a detailed training programme, so they can keep themselves and visitors safe while reopening the tourism industry.

“I am satisfied so far that the entities are buying and preparing the necessary COVID-19 equipment and that the ability to use and manipulate this equipment is being taught and internalised by the workers,” said Jamaica Tourism Minister, Hon Edmund Bartlett. He added that the examples seen at the locations visited showed that “we are all preparing ourselves with the layer of protection that the industry must provide to ensure that the people of Jamaica will not, in fact, be unduly exposed to the virus.”
