While we may not be going to theatres right now to catch the latest flicks, movies releasing on OTT platforms are compensating for this by helping us travel to places virtually. Director Faruk Kabir’s Khuda Haafiz is releasing on Hotstar today, doubling as our ticket to Uzbekistan. Here are all the tourist spots in the Central Asian nation that we’re dreaming of ahead of the movie’s release. By Bayar Jain

Set during the financial crises of 2007-2008, director Faruk Kabir’s latest release Khuda Haafiz (translating to may God be your guardian) follows Sameer Chaudhary (played by Vidyut Jammwal) as he races against time to save his wife, Nargis (played by Shivaleeka Oberoi) from flesh-trading kidnappers. The trailer promises action sequences, intense bouts of bloodied fights, and a rustic, yet gorgeous journey across the terrains of Uzbekistan. From glimpses of the country’s intricate weaves to the historic architectural marvels… we are hoping to see it all. While we wait for the movie to release on August 14, we’re dreaming of these gems from this ancient country.

1. Samarkand

Undoubtedly a star of the ancient silk route, Samarkand resonates with a mystical aura draped in blue. Replete with intricate Islamic architecture such as blue domes, high minarets, and colourful mosaics, this once-thriving destination claims to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in Central Asia.

2. Tashkent

India’s political connection to Tashkent is long-known. However, it’s touristic lure isn’t far behind either. Reminiscent of the Soviet era with cameos of modernity, this capital city has gleaming skyscrapers and heritage sites like the Minor Mosque coexisting in perfect harmony. Even today, part of the charm remains in the relatively sleepy part of the city where a maze of mud-walled houses lines the crowded bazaars.

3. Bukhara

Boasting of 140 architectural monuments, a stopover at Bukhara is a must for travellers interested in Islamic theology and culture. It is said that the people of this former Samanid empire capital have been around for at least five millennia, garnering a huge repository of traditions along the way. In fact, so expansive this treasure trove of culture that UNESCO has listed the historic centre of Bukhara as a World Heritage Site.

4. Khiva

The walled city of Khiva is like a universe of its own. Dating back to 2,000 years (at least), it is encircled by brick walls split into two parts: Dichan Kala (the outer town) and Itchan Kala (inner town). While old, both halves of this town continue to retain more than 50 historic monuments and 250 houses. For instance, the Djuma Mosque here dates to the 10th century and still has 112 of its original columns standing tall.

5. Rishton

If you wish to understand the famous silk weaves of Uzbekistan, Rishton is your one-stop destination for it. Located in the Fergana region—an area synonymous with handicraft traditions—this town houses artisans aplenty. Picture ikat silk textiles, delicate glazed ceramics and many clay arts.
