On a road trip across the United Kingdom, a traveller rekindles his love affair with lakes at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Lake District National Park. By Rahul Jagtiani
As a city dweller, I yearn for vacation spots that allow me to explore the great outdoors, and the Lake District offers this aplenty. An early morning dip in Lake Windermere is the best wake-me-upper, while the highly recommended walk with wolves gives an adrenaline rush I wouldn’t forget in a long time! Here, Dee and Daniel Ashman, keen environmentalists and directors at The Predator Experience educate me on the peculiar traits of Maska and Kajika, hybrid wolves that bear an uncanny physical similarity with Huskies. The less adventurous folk would relish gazing at the sheer beauty of the rolling hills and luscious landscapes, as well as appreciating a steamer ride on Ullswater Lake while soaking in the gorgeous views.
Lake District is synonymous with poetry and a must-visit here is the stunning country home of William Wordsworth, one of Britain’s beloved poets. It is here that he penned his famous Daffodils’ poem, inspired by the breathtaking scenery around his Rydal Mount home.

While England is one of the top gin producing nations in the world, the distilleries here are also gaining ground in the production of world-class whiskey, much like their coveted counterparts in neighbouring Scotland. The Lakes Distillery offers a wonderful tasting experience, and its location right next to an alpacas farm makes it an attractive stop for adults and children, alike.
Various establishments in the Lake District are embracing practices that support a sustainable way of living: sourcing local produce, using biomass boilers to heat buildings and supporting charities that conserve the wildlife of the region. Customised road trips such as these, where one can enjoy a slower pace of life in a manner that’s also mindful of the environment, are likely to find wider acceptance in a post-COVID-19 world.
