Jamnagar in Gujarat will soon be home to the largest zoo in the world spanning over 250 acres. Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming mega establishment. By Kumar Shree
After a recent announcement, it has now been confirmed that Jamnagar is all set to have the largest zoo in the world. Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) will set up a ‘Greens Zoological Rescue and the Rehabilitation Kingdom’ in Jamnagar, Gujarat. The zoo will add another element to the rich tourism circuit of the state.

As reported by India Today, MK Das, additional chief secretary in Gujarat chief minister’s office said, “As we all know the world’s tallest statue is in Gujarat. Now, one of the world’s biggest zoos, in terms of number and species of animals at one place, is coming up [soon] in Jamnagar.”
As per the layout plan, the zoo will have dedicated sections for different types of organisms. These sections will be names as the Aquatic Kingdom, Dragon’s Land, Exotic Island, Forest of India, Frog House, Indian Desert, Insectarium, Land of Rodent, and Marshes of West Coast.
These sections will be home to a wide variety of organisms such as African Lion, African Elephant, Asiatic Lion, Bengal Tiger, Cheetah, Chimpanzee, Fishing Cat, Gorilla, Giraffe, Green Anacondas, Indian Wolf, Jaguar, Komodo Dragon, Lemur, Malayan Tapir, Orangutan, Pygmy Hippo, Yellow Anacondas, and Zebra.

The Central Zoo Authority’s website mentions, “The Detailed Project Report [DPR] submitted along with the Master [Layout] Plan for the proposed establishment of the Greens Zoological Rescue and the Rehabilitation Kingdom at Jamnagar, Gujarat by Reliance Industries Limited was approved by the 33rd Meeting of the Central Zoo Authority held on February 12, 2019.”
The layout plan also reveals that the zoo will have conservation and breeding areas, water bodies, interpretation centre, rescue and rehabilitation centre apart from the enclosure areas. As per the projected timeline, the zoo will take two years for completion. Upon completion, it will come across as one of the largest zoos in the world.
