Touted as Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon, Chilika Lake is one of Odisha’s most popular tourist spots. Taking a boat ride in the idyllic setting of the lake is an enriching experience that nature lovers should have at least once in their lifetime. The lake serves as a habitat for a large number of bird species. It also welcomes migratory birds in winters. Chilika is one of the world’s only two lagoons, where you can find Irrawaddy dolphins making a splash. The Nalabana Island within the lagoon has been recognised as a bird sanctuary. While the lake is a beauty in itself, several places around its vicinity are worthwhile to visit as well. Don’t forget to try Crab and Prawn Masala at one of the small eateries around the lake.

Bhitarakanika National Park is formed by a network of creeks and canals which are inundated with waters from Brahmani, Baitarani, Dhamra, and Patasala rivers. Other than saltwater crocodiles, who can be seen taking sunbaths by the shore, one can also spot reptiles like water monitor lizards and pythons. The national park is also a birdwatching haven, with as many as eight varieties of Kingfishers. Wildlife lovers would also love chance encounters with deers, hyenas, wild boars, and other animals.
