Pondicherry

Lovely beaches, iconic cathedrals and authentic French cuisine are reasons enough to travel to this erstwhile French colony. Pondicherry, or Puducherry, as we now know it, has lovely surprises for you at every nook and corner. From spending blissful mornings at the Promenade to soaking in the old-world colonial charm in White Town, there’s much to look forward to. You can even experience the magical underwater world during a rejuvenating scuba session here.

A little ahead lies Auroville, which makes for a nice excursion. You can start your day at the Rock Beach, followed by a wholesome French breakfast at one of the many eateries around Promenade Beach. The best part about Puducherry is that it can easily be explored on foot or on a rented scooter. You may even hire an auto-rickshaw for the day and visit the must-see places. These include Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Eglise de Notre Dame des Anges, Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Temple and Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

Bir Billing

If you are the adventurous kind, Bir and Billing must be on your list. Renowned as India’s paragliding capital, the twin villages of Bir and Billing are beautifully nestled in the lush valleys of Kangra. Both these tiny hamlets lie 14km from each other. And paragliding is not the only thing you can do here. There’s much more to Bir Billing than taking shaky selfies up in the air. The villages are blessed with a rich Tibetan culture and house age-old monasteries. Not to forget scrumptious Tibetan delicacies including everyone’s favourite momos.

Bir is also known for its surreal sunsets. So, if you are someone who loves to spend soulful evenings just adoring the myriad hues of the sky, Bir is exactly what the physician prescribed. The sunset point also serves as the landing site for paragliders, which makes it quite a happening place to be at. Hire a mountain bike to explore the monasteries. These include Chokling Monastery, Nyingyang Monastery, Tsering Jo Monastery, Paplung Sherabling Monastery, and the Dharmalaya Institute. And that’s not all. You can also hike to stunning waterfalls and take a refreshing dip in one of the hot water springs here.

Udupi

If a wellness holiday is what you are seeking in 2022, look no further than Udupi. Home to an age-old Krishna temple, this coastal town in Karnataka has also gained popularity as an Ayurveda and health centre. The most popular attraction in Udupi is the Malpe beach. Adorned with swaying palms and azure waters, the beach will leave you refreshed and how. When here, you can also visit the much-revered Balarama temple and the old tile factory, established by the Basel Mission. If you are looking for a little thrill, embark on a white-water rafting expedition at river Sita.

Another must-visit place when in Udupi is the St. Mary’s Island, a National Geological Monument. Located at a 30-minute boat ride from Udupi, the island is home to some of India’s cleanest and most gorgeous beaches. If artefacts and architecture is your thing, head to Hasta Shilpa, an open-air museum. It showcases 30 tastefully restored traditional Karnataka coastal houses. Any trip to Udupi would be incomplete without seeking the almighty’s blessings at the Sri Krishna temple, flocked by devotees throughout the year. You may also visit the Anantheshwara and Chandramouleshwara temples, located at a kissing distance from the Sri Krishna temple.

Bhimtal

Ditch Nainital and travel to its quieter sibling Bhimtal for a truly peaceful experience. The lake city is named after Mahabharata’s Bhima and promises an idyllic holiday away from the tourist bustle of Nainital. From nature walks to birding trips to boating, Bhimtal will give you enough reasons to fall for it. From here, you can also make a small trip to Sattal and Naukuchiatal.
