If you are planning a long weekend road trip from Delhi in August, we have some good recommendations for you. By Karan Kaushik

What’s better than a weekend? A long weekend. Come August and we will have the Independence Day holiday on a Monday. And then there’s Janamasthmi and there’s Rakhi. These long weekend road trips from Delhi must be on your radar.

Long weekend road trips from Delhi

Delhi to Neemrana (116 km away)

The royal town of Neemrana is a quick and short drive from Delhi, and it packs a multitude of experiences to make your visit worthwhile. The royal town fascinates visitors with its architectural richness, eclectic cuisine, and a bevy of adventure sports. The Neemrana Fort Palace built in 1464 AD doubles as a modern-day hotel, and the site for Flying Fox, one of the most popular adventure sports in the town. We’d recommend clubbing your Neemrana visit with a day trip to Tijara. Tip: Stopver at Mannat Dhaba in Dharuhera on your way to Neemrana for delicious food.

Delhi to Agra-Fatehpur Sikri (243 km away)

Visiting the Taj Mahal is always a great idea. Celebrate India’s incredible built heritage this independence month. Let your work desk gather a little dust and emails go unanswered as you set out to glide on the openness of the Yamuna Expressway from Delhi to Agra. The city pulls you into the charm of its magical Mughal gardens, and majestic monuments. Apart from the Taj Mahal, important attractions include Agra Fort, Mehtab Bagh, and Itimad-Ud-Daulah. Get some petha from Panchhi Petha for home. You must also keep a day for exploring the utterly magnificent Fatehpur Sikri.

Delhi to Lansdowne (28o km away)

A weekend trip to Lansdowne is not getting passé anytime soon. Lansdowne lures travellers with its rich avifaunal biodiversity, picturesque deodar-clad landscape, age-old hill temples, Victorian churches, and calming water bodies making it the perfect spot for a road trip from Delhi. From rejuvenating nature walks to rewarding treks to birdwatching, for a small cantonment town, the charming hilly hamlet offers lovely surprises for travellers. Your itinerary should include boating at Bhulla Tal Lake, Tip-In-Top Point, St. Mary’s Church, St. John’s Church, Darwan Singh Sangrahalaya, and Tarkeshwar Mahadev Temple.

Delhi to Mashobra (353 km away)

If you wish to travel to an offbeat hill station, allow Mashobra to be your muse. Those taking the Delhi-Chandigarh highway, do not forget to take pitstops at the iconic roadside dhabas — especially, Amrik Sukhdev and Pehalwan Dhaba. With wider highways to drive through, you can reach the ‘Quieter Shimla’ under eight hours from Delhi. When you are in Mashobra, try adventure sports like camping, trekking, rappelling, and hiking. Sitting at a distance of about 13 km from Shimla, Mashobra provides perfect serenity for people who are looking for some quietude amid nature.

Delhi to Amritsar (448 km away)

If you have an undying love for history and food, celebrate Independence month in Amritsar. Remember the sacrifice of our great freedom fighters at the Jalianwala Bagh. Walk back through the pages of history at the Partition Museum in Town Hall. Let your heart swell with patriotism at the Wagah Border. When done embracing spiritual bliss at the Golden Temple, don’t miss the divine langar. Some of the best places to eat include Beera’s Chicken, Kesar da Dhaba, Gopaldas Jalebi, and Pehelwan Kulcha.

Delhi to Dharamshala (474 km away)

While the Kangra valley is a mesmerising bouquet of dreamy landscapes, it would not be wrong to term Dharamshala as the pride of the valley. After all, lush greenery, gushing streams, pristine grasslands, and stunning backdrops as far as the eyes can see— Dharamshala is truly remarkable. If you want to experience a session of serene Buddhist chantings, the Kalachakra temple and the Dalai Lama temple in the nearby McLeod Ganj area are ideal choices. Other prominent spots include St. John in the Wilderness, Bhagsunag Falls, and Aghanjar Mahadev Temple.

Delhi to Bundi-Kota-Jhalawar (486 km away)

This has to be one of the most underrated road trips from Delhi. The lesser-explored region of Hadoti in Rajasthan will leave you spellbound in the monsoon season. Blessed with a rich built heritage and verdant landscapes, Hadoti promises a fantastic long weekend trip. Drive to Bundi from Delhi via Jaipur. Spend the first day exploring the Garh Palace and Taragarh Fort, Bhimlat Waterfalls, and other gems of Bundi. Head to Kota the next day and treat your eyes to the spectacular natural beauty of Garadia Mahadev and Parajhar Waterfalls. Your last stop should be the lush green town of Jhalawar, known for the Gagron Fort.

Delhi to Orchha-Jhansi (599 km away)

One of the best road trips from Delhi, Orchha is best visited over a long weekend. A typical itinerary for Orchha includes rafting at the Betwa, visiting the Jehangir Mahal Palace, paying obeisance at the Raja Ram Temple, and appreciating the painterly traditions of Bundelkhand at the Laxmi Narayan Temple. Nature lovers can explore the Orchha Wildlife Sanctuary, which serves as a home to species like wild boar and sloth bear. Another prime attraction of Orchha is the cenotaphs of the Orchha rulers, which stand on the Kanchana Ghat by the Betwa. Also of note is the iconic Chaturbhuj Temple, located right opposite the Raja Ram Temple. You may also fancy a short trip to Jhansi. If time permits, extend your trip to Gwalior.
