Exploring Lunglei in Mizoram for the ultimate adventure

Lunglei is home to some of the most exotic plants and rare animal species. You can take a stroll in the mystical Saza Wildlife Sanctuary for a healing experience amidst countless migratory birds or visit the Thorangtlang Wildlife Sanctuary to spot elephants, tigers, leopards, wild dogs, barking deer and more.

Lunglei got its name from a rock resembling a bridge that surfaced near the bank of the Nghasih stream. The incident prompted the district to be named Lunglei, literally translating to ‘bridge of rock’. Hence, it is only fair for you to pause and admire the gushing water passing by the Lunglei Bridge.

Lunglei has a plethora of cultural offerings, too. Plan a visit to the Saikuti Hall; the culturally significant building houses various artefacts, handicrafts, museums and a library that reflects the vibrant lifestyle and rich tradition of the people here.

Make sure to see the engraved image of Lord Buddha in Mualcheng village. The Buddhist relic has a mysterious origin that’s still unknown. Its arrival in Mizoram is still an enigma as there are no other Buddhist relics in the entire state.

And, if you’ve been craving a good trek, Lunglei will not disappoint. Youth Hostels Association of India, Mizoram holds various trekking expeditions in the interiors of Lunglei every year in November. You can also chat with locals during these excursions and unravel many fascinating stories of the land.

Although Lunglei is accessible throughout the year, it is advisable to plan a visit between October to March. The tourist lodge in Lunglei is a good stay option. You can also check out Hotel Elite. However, the scenic beauty of Mizoram will enthral you regardless of wherever you stay.
