Miyar Valley Trek: The Best Way To Experience The Hidden Gems Of Himachal & Ladakh

The north of India is like a gem-studded crown sitting on the nation’s crown. Towering mountains, rivers older than time, and an unmatched natural aura – Miyar Valley in Himachal Pradesh is all that and much more. But, we don’t want to reveal too much about this valley which is the meeting point of Himachali and Ladakhi topography and culture. Instead, let us tell you why we are in absolute awe of the place. By Shubhanjana Das

The topography of the open valley supports glacial systems and along with Trilokinath in Tunde, the confluence of the Miyar and the Chandra Bhaga river are deemed to be pilgrimage sites for the locals in the region.

Where is Miyar Valley?

Miyar Valley is located in the Lahaul region of Himachal Pradesh, extending for about 100 km from Udaipur to Kang La Pass, located at a height of 17,939 feet. Also known as the Valley of Flowers, the valley gets covered by a blanket of rare blue poppy flowers in that altitude.

What is the Miyar Valley Trek about?

The Miyar valley trek starts from Manali and driving through Rohtang Pass, enters the Lahaul valley. The trek starts from Udaipur after a nightlong halt and lasts for 8 days. The trek will take you from lush green meadows to the alpine rocks of the Zanskar valley, rugged and brown. It is a predominantly flat walk that traverses grasslands, mountain streams, moraine, boulders, and glaciers running along the Miyar Nala. Expect quaint Himalayan Villages and Buddhist monasteries which will be the only population you will meet along the way, except for the herds of sheep, of course. You will see the terrain around you shifting constantly and on the 4th or 5th day (depending on your pace) you will witness the rare sight of about seven high-altitude lakes.

What is the difficulty rate of this trek?

Miyar Valley trek is the only trek in the region which is predominantly a flat walk. The difficulty level is moderate because you would still have to cope with the altitude and the weather of the region. The trek is perfect even for beginners but isn’t recommended for children below 15 years of age. Temperatures may plummet to -5 Degrees Celsius at night during the winters. So, make sure you are well-armored with multiple pairs of dry socks, fleece clothing, and wind-cheaters.

What is the best time to do the trek?

Summer months of September and October are considered to be the best time to undertake this venture.
