History of Pushkar

Pushkar is a quiet town located a few kilometres away from Ajmer. The town, with its lake, traditional-style structures and the Brahma Temple, is a quaint place for visitors. The place has a hippie vibe, mixed with modernity, and makes for a great tourist destination.

Pushkar also has a strong history. The only place in the entire world that has a Brahma temple, as well as the only place with 500 temples within one small town. The town is also a picturesque destination, being surrounded by lakes on three sides and sand dunes on the fourth. The lakes are dotted with many ghats which make for a beautiful sight.

Pushkar is also popular among international tourists, who love spending time here and exploring the alleyways. What’s more, the annual camel fair here is a must-visit. It includes dances, music, and delectable food and hosts artisans, too!

Camel Fair

The Pushkar Camel Fair is an annual event that attracts tourists from across the globe. The fair is for those who want to visit the town to get a feel of Rajasthan. The famous event is an amalgamation of music, dance, and culture, with tents for those who want to stay overnight, artisans displaying their wares, local folk musicians and dancers enthralling visitors with their performances and delectable cuisine.

The festival is also a hub for camel traders to meet and display their animals, engaging in selling and purchasing cattle, and is the biggest cattle festival – at least in India. The town gets decked up in festive colours and there’s a general sense of celebration in the air, making the festival a must-visit for those seeking unique experiences.

One of the reasons Pushkar is such a popular tourist destination is because it houses the only Brahma temple in the world. Every year, thousands of devotees come to pay their respects and visit the ghats at the nearby Pushkar Lake.

Perched atop a hill, the Savitri Temple not only is a place of worship, but also offers beautiful views. The hour-long climb can be done on foot or via a ropeway – no matter the method, the end result will be a fulfilling experience with sights that will bring peace to you.

Apart from these, there are several other temples that you can visit. Also, local markets are great for some food – vegetarian in nature – as well as some shopping. Be sure to buy rosewater, gulkand and other rose products from the destination!

How to reach Pushkar

The nearest airport is Jaipur, which is about 140 kilometres from Pushkar. By train, you can reach Ajmer Junction, which is about 14 kilometres (or 30 minutes) by road. You can also board a bus to Pushkar, or come here on a road trip from Delhi, Jaipur, Udaipur and other areas!
