Road trips in Mizoram for the journey of a lifetime

Aizawl-Hmuifang-Thenzawl

Aizawl, being the capital city of Mizoram, is also among the most popular and developed cities. You can arrive here by air or by road from Silchar, which is the nearest railway station. The city itself is a stunning place, with beautiful roads, scenic landscapes and warm people, who will introduce you to the local cuisine and culture before you embark on a road trip.

In Aizawl, book a taxi or a self-driven car and head on to Hmuifang, about 53 kilometres from the city. The hill station is often visited by tourists from across the country, and the stunning mountain views, crystal clear waters and variety of adventure activities only add to the thrill.

Thenzawl is located about 38 kilometres from Hmuifang, and is where the bulk of the traditional handloom industry of the region is located. This is among the most picturesque road trips in Mizoram, taking you to the stunning town and bringing you closer to the local Mizo culture. Be sure to pick up a few pieces to take back home from here! Be sure to visit Vantwang falls and the Tuirihiau falls when you’re here.

Champhai is a serene place that offers some great treks and other adventure activities. Be sure to visit local wine factories, especially if in season, and see some stunning vineyards. Located roughly 23 kilometres from here is Zokhathwar, on the Indo-Myanmar border. Spend some time soaking in the sights before you head to Rih Dil, a serene lake in Myanmar roughly four kilometres from Zokhathwar. Be sure to keep your Aadhar Cards and identity proofs with you to be allowed entry, and spend some time soaking in the views and crystal clear waters here, before you head back to Champhai or head back home.

If you have time in hand, a road trip from Aizawl to Lunglei should definitely be on your list. The destination, located about 169 kilometres from Aizawl and about 78 kilometres from Thenzawl, makes for a great destination to cover on the same road trip. Lunglei derives its name from a rock-cut bridge in the area, and its scenic landscapes and stunning views make it a must-visit when in Mizoram.

Aizawl-Kolasib

Another great road trip in Mizoram you can take to experience life away from the city is the one to Kolasib. Located 86 kilometres from Aizawl, the village provides an insight into life by the riverside and allows you to experience local culture. What’s more, the sight of the lush green trees surrounding River Tlwang and Tamdil Lake will be etched into your memory like a perfectly painted landscape forever!

If you love adventurous treks, this is the destination for you. Phawngpui, located about 40 kilometres from Mizoram, is home to national parks and some stunning peaks such as the Phawngpui peak, which is the highest point in the state. Trek up the mountain and walk amid the clouds, which will transport you into a world of fantasy. The peak is also called the Blue Mountain, as it appears to be of a stunning blue hue from afar.
