Surajkund Lake (39 kilometres)

Surajkund is a popular spot near Delhi within 150 kilometres. The semicircular space is where the annual Surajkund Mela is conducted in February and becomes abuzz with activity, especially around these days.

Apart from the mela, Surajkund Lake is a great spot for someone looking for a picnic spot. The drive from the city is a smooth one, thanks to its location, and the lake is a great spot to spend a couple of hours in solitude or for a family picnic, provided you pick up the litter when you leave!

Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary (50 kilometres)

In Haryana, the Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary is about an hour and a half away from Delhi, making it one of the easiest to reach destinations within 150 kilometres in Delhi. The place is great for early mornings when the sun isn’t too hot, and the avian creatures can roam about freely.

Pick up your binoculars and your camera and go bird-spotting here. You can also speak to the locals or look for a guide – however, if you go early morning over a weekend, you’ll find a lot of birdwatching enthusiasts who will be only too willing to help you identify some of these winged creatures!

Another popular destination near Delhi, Damdama Lake, is close enough for a day trip and far enough in case you want to spend some more time there. A great spot for family picnics and outings, the lake is one of the largest in the area. What’s more, the availability of resorts and hotels around ensures you get a quiet weekend away from home spent within comfort and luxury at a distance that’s easy to cover from home in case you feel the need to come back sooner than you thought!

Havelis and Shiv Kund, Sohna (64 kilometres)

Sohna Road is an area that has been developed in the last few years, and the presence of various resorts and retreats, apart from homes, makes it an accessible spot for those needing a getaway from the bustling city, while remaining close by. The Shiv Kund area in Sohna makes for a great trip within 150 kilometres from Delhi, as the hot water springs rejuvenate you and allow you to explore sulphur springs in the city. What’s more, the havelis around the area make for a great place to go on a heritage walk and learn more about the traditional styles of architecture that were practised in and around Delhi.

The Kuchesar Fort is now a heritage hotel, which makes it an apt place to spend a weekend away in luxury. Its close proximity to Delhi means a shorter drive to witness the heritage structures and to live in one, as you explore all that the place has to offer. It makes for a great one-night stay away from Delhi, and something to experience at least once!

Known for the three battles of Panipat (1526, 1556, and 1721), Panipat has found a strong place in Indian history. Known today for its textiles and carpets, the city also houses a war memorial for those who want to learn a bit more about the city’s history. It also houses the tomb of Ibrahim Khan Lodhi, in case one wants to visit.

Unchagaon (117 kilometres)

A mud fort built in the 1850s, the Unchagaon Fort belonged to the zamindars of Uttar Pradesh. Now a resort, the fort boasts of a blend of heritage and modern amenities for people to come, unwind and spend the weekend. Guests can roam around the fort and see the different sections of the fort structure, and the property is a great one for those planning a wedding close to the city.

Neemrana Fort (120 kilometres)

A popular place to visit within 150 kilometres from Delhi, Neemrana Fort Palace in Rajasthan is said to have been the home of the Chauhans until 1947, and the erstwhile ruling dynasty are said to be the descendants of Prithviraj Chauhan. The place, about three hours from Delhi, makes for a great weekend getaway from Delhi, especially for those looking for a quiet getaway. The now industrial hub has several resorts that one can stay at and experience heritage within the comfort of luxury.

Noor Mahal and Karna Lake, Karnal (122 kilometres)

Owned by an ex-Army man, Noor Mahal is a beautiful property nestled in Karnal, Haryana. The place houses several antiques in its luxurious accommodation and makes for a great weekend getaway from the city life of Delhi. What’s more, the Karna Lake (named after Karna, from the Mahabharata), is a great spot nearby for those looking for a quiet getaway by the water.

Kurukshetra (153 kilometres)

Kurukshetra is an important site in the Mahabharata, as this is the place where the five Pandava brothers fought against their Kaurava cousins. Kurukshetra is also where Krishna recited the Bhagwad Gita to Arjuna.

The place, about three hours from Delhi, makes for a great day trip about 150 kilometres from Delhi and is a place where one can learn about ancient Indian history and mythology. The lake here, along with the museums, make for great spots to visit and can be covered in a couple of hours, ensuring you reach home before the sun sets!
