However, as the country came to a standstill on March 24 following a nationwide lockdown due to the ongoing pandemic, these sites – like all the others in the country – were forced to shut shop and bar tourists from exploring these destinations physically. Almost four months later, however, tourist destinations in Madhya Pradesh have reopened their doors again. As per a release by the state tourism board, State Tourism Development Corporation Hotels, resorts, and private hotels at these tourist destinations are now reopening. Moreover, a circular issued by the state also announces the reopening of national parks in Madhya Pradesh, effective June 15. The circular also states that buffer zones of these national parks will also remain open throughout the monsoon months to further increase tourism.

Speaking on this, Sonia Meena, IAS, Additional Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board was quoted:“Madhya Pradesh is very strong with its domestic tourism. Opening up tourist attractions will also give a sense of ‘returning to normalcy.'” Meena further adds that all social distancing norms, hygiene guidelines, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) issued by the Ministry of Tourism are also being followed. Sanitation and fumigations are some of the other protocols reportedly underway.

Highlighting its reliance on domestic tourism, Madhya Pradesh hopes to attract tourists from its neighbouring states in the first segment of travellers. The release further states that good road networks of the state and its neighbours will play a major role in luring tourists. Weekend trips or small vacations spanning three to four days are anticipated to be in demand when it comes to rebound travel.
