The new trail will run from New York to the Canada border and from Lake Erie to the Capital District in a T-shape. The Empire Trail project was announced back in 2017 and will now connect two previously existing but disconnected trails that will be joined by 350 miles (563 kilometres) to the newly added pathways that will connect near Albany.

During the launch of the project back in 2017, Andrew Cuomo, the Governor of New York had announced that the trail would be the largest multi-use trail network upon completion in the United States. According to predictions, the trail is expected to receive a footfall of nearly nine million visitors, including tourists and residents, who will enjoy the trail for hiking and cycling activities.
