The Popeye Village is Europe’s only standing film set, also the location of Robert Altman’s popular comedy film ‘Popeye’. Situated at the Anchor Bay, Mellieha, this village is also known as the ‘Sweethaven village’. By Divyansh Mehta
A visit to the original film set of the musical production Popeye is a must when you visit Malta. Popeye Village is a great place to take your kids as they will get to meet their favourite cartoon characters. Situated in the core of Mellieha, the Sweethaven village is an excellent beach destination where you can spend days basking under the sun and overlooking the stunning blue expanse.
Numerous caves and beaches around MelliehaBayy are well-equipped with sun beds, umbrellas, showers, splash pools and even a kids’ area to ensure that you have a gala time at the destination.
The Popeye Village also hosts popular events like the ‘Take 2 filming’, where you get to participate in a filming process and get to become an actor in an action movie. In fact, you get to choose the character to play! You can get to be the mighty villain or the heroic lead who carries the responsibility of world safety on his/her shoulders (or the bulging biceps like that of Popeye’s).
Strolling around the entire village and appreciating the 39-year-old structure in its original glory would surely count as one of the best experiences to cherish.
It is pretty convenient to commute within this island country. The Popeye Village is about 25 kms from Malta International Airport, and can be reached easily by taxi or bus service.
