Vertical wind tunnels offer the adrenaline rush of a free fall without the need for parachutes and aircrafts. And they’re now accessible in India. Thrill-seekers can sign up for the country’s first indoor skydiving experience at GravityZip in Hyderabad, which will officially open on April 17. By Eshita Srinivas
In a first for India, GravityZip in Gandipet, Hyderabad offers adventurers the opportunity to experience skydiving indoors. Considered to be relatively safer than its outdoor counterpart, this activity involves being in a vertical cylindrical tunnel that creates a smooth column of air to ride on. Pre-bookings are now open on the company’s official website, and prices are slated to be between INR 2,000 and INR 3,000.

Conducted in a closed, safe, and controlled environment, indoor skydiving isn’t affected by external weather conditions and turbulence. It’s also accessible to most people, save for pregnant women and those with prior medical conditions. GravityZip was quoted in a news report by India Today as saying, “Anyone in relatively good health can enjoy indoor skydiving – in fact, we will do as much as we can to help you experience the amazing sport of indoor skydiving.”
The Hindu reports that the space, built on less than half an acre of land, has a tunnel that stands at three metres. The wind speed, which can vary from person to person, is maintained at 200 to 400 kilometres. Two turbines, which run on 800-kilowatt power as well as a generator, power the wind speed. Participants will be required to wear a jumpsuit made of spandex, nylon, and cotton as well as lace-up shoes and a helmet.

The staff are believed to be certified trainers from Europe, a report by Telangana Today adds. The entire experience reportedly lasts three times longer than freefall from a plane, Ram Meda, the co-founder of the project states. “It also is less risky and the fear aspect is cut down.” Unfavourable climatic conditions in India often lead many to head to other countries for a taste of flight. This experience available within the country might change that. Meda further added, “I wanted to convert the dream of flying into a reality for everyone. Skydiving is extremely expensive, and most people do not have adequate training and experience. However, indoor skydiving provides proper training and experience.”
