Spain’s Secretary of State for Tourism, Isabel Oliver has in a recent meeting of the Tourism Sector Commission, agreed to coordinate on a single health protocol against COVID-19 to prepare for the reopening of the tourism sector, once the containment measures have been eased.  

“Security is going to be fundamental in the new normality that awaits us. There is no certainty about when we can restart tourism, but we must reopen in safe sanitary conditions for those who visit us and for workers, residents and the environment,” said Oliver.

This homogeneous protocol will include the requirements that each sub-sector or tourist activity must comply with in terms of hygiene and sanitary security. It will work in the field of concentration of economic and social agents to prepare this protocol and with the participation of the Institute for Spanish Tourism Quality (ICTE).  

At the meeting, Oliver also conveyed to the Spanish Autonomous Communities, the intention of developing a campaign to stimulate national tourism once the evolution of the pandemic allows it.

“At the initiative of Spain, nine EU countries propose a European Recovery Plan to support and relaunch the tourism sector, which includes homogeneous protocols, sufficient funds and specific attention to the territories most affected by #COVID-19,” tweeted, Ministerio de Industria, Comercio y Turismo — Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism. Gobierno de España, Government of Spain. 

Moreover, as per reports, the beaches of Spain are likely to reopen by mid–June, but with measures to make people self-regulate, which might also include putting up barriers, in order to maintain social distancing.

Many of the Spanish islands are heavily dependent on tourism, and the travel restrictions amid the pandemic, have destroyed many livelihoods. Balearic Island hot spots like Mallorca and Ibiza, which run completely on tourism, are the worst hit in terms lack of earning due to the lockdown.
