If you’re looking to spend time around nature in the company of adorable dogs, chirping birds, fantastic food and great conversations, then Foothills Himalaya is just the perfect place for you. By Harpreet Saini
Foothills Himalaya is an adorable homestay nestled amid the thickets of Jim Corbett National Park on one side and the foothills of Nainital on the other. If you’re seeking a break from the city life to rejuvenate, relax and appreciate nature, this is the perfect getaway for you. When here, you can pamper yourself to scenic views, fresh air, stunning trekking trails, delicious home-cooked organic food, and four cute dogs—Simba, Nala, Rani and Pebbles.
Upon arriving at Foothills Himalaya, my friends and I are welcomed by gracious hosts—Rushil Shergill, his lovely parents, staff, and four dogs happily wagging their tails. We’re offered a clean and comfortable room adorned with recycled rustic wooden furniture. The quaint abode, we learn, is sustainably developed using twisted pillars and high arches. The beautiful verandah offers a great spot to sit back and enjoy the symphony of birdsongs along with whiffs of crisp air amid beautiful garden views.
We spend our days going on several walks, treks, drives, watching birds and cuddling with dogs. The nights are reserved for stargazing. We also manage to squeeze in a safari at Jim Corbett National Park. My favourite, however, is doing absolutely nothing, having a drink and gazing at the abundance of nature around me.
The highlight of our stay is learning about birds. Shergill is a keen falconer who rescues and rehabilitates birds of prey. He helps me spot some majestic Himalayan falcons during the trek. Spotting a black Shaheen falcon is the highlight of the trip. We’re extremely lucky to get a glimpse of this majestic bird, albeit from a safe distance as these birds are also very ferocious.

I also thoroughly enjoy listening to great stories and life experiences by Rushil and his father, Sherry Shergill (who is a retired army officer and a falconer himself).
The best part of my stay is the food, as every single dish served here is delicious. Since I am vegan, the hosts are extra cautious about my food while also ensuring I get to enjoy good local dishes. My friends, however, enjoy some great jungli chicken, pizzas and mutton delicacies.
