a lesson in history.

History buffs would know of Maharaja’s penchant for architecture. A glimpse of this finds a space at The LaLiT Grand Palace Srinagar. Simple European lines outline the space while the interiors come fitted with the best from the state, country, and Europe.

The Royal family lived in the suites near the Chinar trees on the ground floor. The nearing puja house, which served as the family’s meditation and prayer cottage, was easily accessible from here. The main driveway and the Durbar Hall entrances were reserved for state visits and ceremonial occasions. The Viceroy and Vicerine suites, located on the first floor, were opened for the annual state visits of the Viceroy. A pompous live band echoed tunes from the first floor on such special visits.

Today, The LaLiT Grand Palace Srinagar operates 113 well-equipped palace guest rooms, including 10 cottages boasting of magnificent decor, over 4,000 square feet of banqueting space, conference facilities, and a shopping arcade. Panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges overlooking the serene Dal Lake add to its beauty. Pair this with the old-world architecture and palace grounds that are home to some of the oldest chinars, and a paradisiacal stay is guaranteed. In fact, the same enormous, lush green gardens also house a tree that witnessed a meeting between Mahatma Gandhi and Maharaja Hari Singh.

The LaLiT Grand Palace Srinagar embodies the true spirit of Kashmir in its every aspect. The carpets used in the hotel premises, some of which date back to 300 years, are woven together by local artists. Papier-mâché art and wooden carvings, too, find a spot here. The hotel’s most striking feature, however, is the chandelier that adorns the lobby. It’s size and glittery persona is sure to catch every guest’s attention, serving as the apt segue to a holiday replete with royalty.
