New York City may have it all, but tranquillity and privacy are far from guaranteed in a city of eight million people. That’s precisely what a new hospitality project by RH (formerly Restoration Hardware) aims to offer its well-heeled guests: comfort, exclusivity, and total privacy. By Dobrina Zhekova

RH Guesthouse, which opened recently on 55 Gansevoort Street in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, is housed in a historic 19th-century triangular loft building, meticulously restored and reimagined to reflect the property’s elevated aesthetics and unique concept. With six adults-only, 500-square-foot guest rooms and three 1,000-square-foot suites spanning two stories, RH Guesthouse is truly an oasis of privacy.

Each accommodation type has two bathrooms, bespoke furnishings, architectural lighting, a private gym, and soundproof windows. Instead of a mini bar, spaces are outfitted with gourmet pantries stocked with a selection of charcuterie, crudités, berries, and a fresh baguette. Climate-controlled Freshbeds by Barry van Doornewaard dressed in impeccable Italian linens round out the in-room amenities. Materials include floor-to-ceiling European white oak and Tuscan travertine paired with Italian merino wool velvet upholstery and stainless-steel accents.

But the crown jewel of RH Guesthouse is the spectacular full-floor penthouse boasting 2,600 square feet of space and 11-foot ceilings. Boiserie panelled walls, Corinthian columns, and herringbone parquet floors are juxtaposed by custom-designed contemporary furnishings, a minimalistic kitchen in travertine, and a monolithic fireplace. Guests can enjoy stunning downtown city views from expansive sofas covered in Loro Piana cashmere upholstery.

“Our goal is to create a new market for travellers seeking privacy and luxury,” Gary Friedman, RH’s chairman and CEO, told Travel + Leisure. Friedman served as design principal on this project. “We believe privacy is the one thing everyone has given away with social media, and it’s one thing the internet has taken away, as you can Google just about anything about everyone. We believe privacy is going to be an important market, and we believe the RH Guesthouse will offer guests a level of privacy, exclusivity, and luxury that you can’t find anywhere else.”

Additionally, guests will have access to a private rooftop with a garden, a 40-foot infinity pool, daybeds, a dining terrace, and multiple lounge areas from which they will enjoy panoramic views of iconic New York City landmarks.

RH Guesthouse will have a private entrance for guests of the property and another one for the public that leads to the Dining Room at RH Guesthouse, a sleek live-fire eatery with soaring ceilings and velvet banquettes. There, patrons can dine on a curated menu of classics such as wood-grilled avocado with caviar, Australian wagyu rib-eye, and a whole branzino cooked over Japanese charcoal. The opulent Champagne & Caviar Bar, an intimate space located in the cellar with a curated selection of premium Champagnes and Petrossian caviar, will cater to those craving more luxurious bites.

“The entire concept was developed internally. We did the architecture, designed the space, developed the restaurants, created the menus, and conceptualised the guest experience,” Friedman said. “We created the Guesthouse from scratch and will control it entirely, offering a seamless experience unlike any other. It is a completely integrated singular design, at a level of taste and quality that guests have never seen before.”
