India’s IT hub, Bengaluru, is taking a giant stride in construction as well. The city will soon have India’s first 3D-printed post office, the construction of which is already in full swing.

Construction company Larsen & Toubro Limited (L&T) is building the 1100 square feet post office, which is coming up at Cambridge Layout in Bangalore’s Halasuru. The project is expected to be fully constructed in about 30 days, media reports state.

What makes the new 3D printed post office in Bangalore special

Apart from the use of technology, the post office’s construction cost is INR 23 lakh. This is about 30 to 40 percent lower than that of a conventional building, which makes the construction more affordable. The structure was first proposed last year in August, and now, the work has finally started.

A video and some pictures of the construction site in the city were shared on social media last week by locals, which soon went viral as people began to take note of this technology. The work began around March 20 and noise levels are “bare minimum”, the Twitter user who posted the video online said.

Talking about the construction, a worker told The Hindu, “The cement, sand, and a waterproof chemical is added into a churner with measured amounts of water. The mixture then comes out in blocks, which will be laid on top of each other along with iron pillars in between for support.”

If all goes as planned and higher authorities approve this new way of constructing buildings, then soon, more such post offices could spring up at various sites.

S Rajendra Kumar, Chief Post Master General of the Karnataka Circle, said, “We have over 400 vacant sites where we want to build post offices. After the construction of this building, we will prepare a report and submit it to the department. Then based on the existing guidelines, if they accept this report, then more such post offices are to be expected.”
